Our Remix of Alicia Keys' 'No One'

It's the song playing RIGHT NOW!!

When Jamille Luney first brought us the track (without Alicia's vocals) we were a bit sketchy. The track was hot, but really avant-garde. She was definitely pushing Alicia out of the pocket of the simple 'No One' tune blasting on the radio.

After we added the vocals we received not complaints from Alicia or her management and it scored over 40,000 plays on MySpace in a month. No one, No one, No one, No o-n-e but Alicia Keys, Jamille Luney, and Trackmasterz can pull that off.

Beyonce Produced By Jamille

Jamille Luney, our Sr. Executive producer, just produced a track with Beyonce on the vocals. It's sick and it's playing on the player below. Jamille is making a name for herself as a producer. We need another female producer in the game and the collab with Beyonce definitely won't hurt. Congrats to our sister and boss, Jamille Luney.

Our Nas & Alicia Keys Remix

We scored a deal through our executive producer Jamille Luney to remix Nas & Alicia Keys to our track "Mysterious". You can listen to the remix here.

Nas' portion fit perfectly, but Alicia's vocals did not come out so well (sorry to say). There was litte we could do, we just received the vocal tracks and were left to fend for ourselves. We tried every trick in the book, sped it up slowed it down, you name.

Long Time

Sorry guys we have not posted anything in a long time. Things have been crazy. We will not lie, we love our independent artists. Hell, we're independent artists. However, the economy has been terrible so sales have been down. Therefore we've been focusing on selling exclusive tracks to labels. We have to cover over head. We're still here for you guys and you are our number one focus with the exception of God.

This works to you're benefit as well. As we sell more tracks to labels and mainstream artists, we build credibility. Trackmasterz and Spoken Word Beats is gaining momentucrem and credibility everyday. Please excuse our absence as of late and we'll be posting new tracks shortly.

Reason 3.0

Somebody asked our executive producer what software we use to produce music. We use Propellerheads Reason 3.0 We received the 3.5 update, but never got around to loading it. We plan to and we're excited that the 4.0 is in beta or soon to be.

Would we recommend Reason? We recommend using what program works best for you. Reason is our top pick and we would advise experimenting with it first. Find a friend who has it and ask a few questions. Test it out before you go and shell out the money. If it's something you feel comfortable on after a couple weeks GO WITH REASON!!

Reason has amazing sounds, effects, processors, and you can sample sounds into it like an AKAI MPC. It works well on both PC and Mac so you can't go wrong. Finally, you can use it with most major audio sequencers (i.e Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, Nuendo, etc..). This is done through a something called rewire, which enables you to make your beat in Reason, but record it directly in to Pro Tools or whatever program you're using.

All the aspects mentioned above are great, but you do have to be computer friendly to learn how to do all these things. In short patience is a must. I wanted to throw the computer through the wall when I first started using Reason four years ago, but now I don't use anything else. Go try different programs and pick the one you feel most comfortable with. Trackmasterz is comfortable with Propellerheads Reason.

Need a Manager?

Almost everybody needs a manager because nobody is accepting unsolicited material. The question is how do I find one? If you're looking on you're own stop looking at those big major labels (unless you know somebody on the inside). Look at small labels who are making waves. The perfect example would be Hidden Beach Records. This is a smaller indie label that houses Jill Scott. Nobody even heard of Hidden Beach until a few years ago when Scott took home a Grammy. When they're small they're looking for talent and a lot more open minded. Problem is, there are not a lot of labels like this.

This brings us to option 2: Musician's Atlas.
The Musician's Atlas is a magazine that lists all the music industries contacts. We're talking managers, entertainment lawyers, record label A&R's, independent A&R's, distribution companies, you name it. It costs about $50.00 and is only printed quarterly or yearly. If you're an aspiring artists and you cannot afford it, go to Borders (we have not seen it in Barnes & Nobles lately), bring a pen and paper and start writing some names down. Now remember the guys that make this magazine have to eat too, so go visit their website and throw them a donation at http://musiciansatlas.com You want somebody to buy your album instead of burning it off the web for free right?

Congratulations you're on the road to finding a manager! No you're not done but you are a hell of a lot closer.

Is Your Beat Really Hot?

How many times have you let people listen to your tracks and get comments like "the mix is off" or "EQ that differently". They may in fact have a valid point. However, if the person you are talking to is a music business contact (i.e A&R, entertainment lawyer, or manager) then their critique is probably a bull crap excuse just to stall you or string you along and keep taking money. Sad but true, a story that employees at Trackmasterz know all to well.

Have you listened to the crap that's on the radio? It's awful and if Britney Spears can get a recording contract then you know they're lying. Has nothing to do with talent, again it's all about money to them. They have to see you as a product, a product they (major record labels, marketing firms, and distributors) can manipulate, sell, and dispose of easily (if need be and heaven forbid). It's a dirty dirty industry, but life is dirty. It's no dirtier than congressmen and senators lobbying for campaign money. Yeah that's pretty dirty!!

In short, you have to be careful about believing criticism. Examine the source it comes from, determine their motives, then decide should you take their advice and go back to the drawing board. Hell, they could just be trying to take the song.

Queen Latifah's " Last Holiday"

This by far is her best work. If you're a Queen Latifah fan and you have not seen it you should be ashamed. If you're not a Queen Latifah fan you should be ashamed. Why are we talking about it? We're into film as well, we just only know how to make the sound in respect to movie production. However, we do love movies!!

Everyone at Trackmasterz and Spoken Word Beats loves this film!! What better way to evaluate our tastes and learn about who we are then our movie picks. If you've been skeptical about what kind of people are behind the music at Trackmasterz and Spoken Word Beats then here's away to find out if we're trustworthy. Go watch "The Last Holiday" starring Queen Latifah. You can buy it at Wal-Mart for like $5 or visit Blockbuster and get 4 for $20.00

After you watch this, you'll trust Trackmasterz and Spoken Word Beats forever!!

Indie Artists Beware of Non-Approved Production Companies

Not all production companies are industry approved so it's best to verify. GOOGLE the name of the company and their producers to see their discography, reputation, customer reviews, and client roster. Always use an industry approved production company, even if it's not trackmasterz.

Best wishes Indie artists.

E-mu Vintage Pro sound module

Novation SuperNova synth

Roland XV-5080 sound module (2)

Timbaland's Studio Equipment

Over the years Timbaland has become one of the most dominant music producers in the world. Go to any country and chances are somebody knows who you're talking about when you say Timbaland. How does he do it? Timbaland does not let too many secrets out, but we do know some of his equipment he's used in the past. The inventory list we have came after an interview with Remix magazine.

Timbaland's Suggested Studio Inventory:

Korg Triton and a Yamaha Motif 7
Ensoniq ASR-10 (Kanye West and the Neptunes have this as well--it's a discontinued
keyboard that samples)

Yamaha NS10s for monitoring
Neumann U 87 mic, a UREI 1176 compressor and a Neve 1076 preamp for microphones
Digidesign Pro Tools
VSTi software synths

How to Pick Which Program to Produce Music With

Aspiring music producers,
There are hundreds of software programs and tons production equipment. How do you choose which one? The answer is right between your eyes. Whatever works best for you!! JayZ has used tracks made on an AKAI MPC 2000 from Kanye West. JayZ has also used tracks made using Pro Tools, AKAI MPC, and other various sound modules/key boards from Timbaland. Kanye West does not use any computer software. Timbaland uses both computer software and studio hardware. Both these producers are Grammy winners and nominees. It does not matter what you use, but what you produce. Is the track hot? Can people hear it? Can they feel it? Than it's all good. Pick what works best for you.

New Rendition of Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain"

The female producer dubbed as "the female Timbaland" (Jamille Luney) produced a rendition of Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain". It's not only impressive in instrumentation, it's amazing someone her age knows anything about the great Lady Day. We've been told Luney is an avid Billie Holiday fan (it's stated on her MySpace).

Learning Music Production For Free

If you want to learn music production but do not have much free time or money, check out http://tweakheadz.com. This site is incredible and free.

Free Sound Samples

You can never have enough sounds samples if you're a music producer. Here are a few sites that provide free sound samples. We'll keep adding as we find more (that are reputable).

http://www.canadianmusicartists.com/samples.html

(if using windows you have to right click and open the sound file in new window)

Buying Music For Your Demo

If you do not produce music visit us, Trackmasterz, and pick from our selection of tracks. Every track has been approved by Def Jam production teams for quality and creativity. However, we do not offer a wide selection. We produce tracks that are industry approved. Ask any A&R if they've heard of Trackmasterz and they'll tell you "YES" and recommend us for your demo.

How To Make Your Demo Properly

Millions of people are making demos, but only thousands are making good demos. Jennifer Lopez cannot sing, but she made a hell of a demo and Sony liked it!! Her vocal performance was non-existent, but the production and song structure masked her imperfections.

The first step in making a demo or recording is picking or creating the music. If you're into creating music then go ahead and make your track. The most important aspect you should be concerned with is the "mix". After you finish producing the track visit your local Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or Circuit City and play your music on as many different stereo systems as you can (don't forget your car as well). If it sounds muffled or unclear on more than one system (cheap or expensive) go back to the studio. Cheap stereos are great for testing your mix on. There is a famous saying among audio engineers: "if you can make it sound good on a cheap system, it will sound even better on an expensive one". Try listening to your tracks on a variety of systems, expensive and cheap.

Picking a Recording Studio

Finally, pick a studio. If your in NC or Florida, we do partner with studios in those areas so send us an email at trackmaster@trackmasterz.com .
Here are some tips for choosing a recording studio.

The most commonly overlooked and forgotten rule of shopping
*****ASK TO HEAR SAMPLES OF THEIR WORK*****

1. $50/hr for a demo recording ($100 if you're recording a live band)

2. Engineer and mix should be included in price

3. Meet the Engineer and see if you like him/her (IMPORTANT)

4. You should be allowed to sit-in on the mix session

5. Make sure it is agreed you will not pay until you like the final mix.

6. Let them hear the track. If you purchased a track from us use the wave file version (not mp3, sound engineers want wave files).

7. Many engineers will try and tell you they need each individual sound seperately to make an accurate mix. They just want you to spend more money!! Remember more time in their studio = more money for them If your track was mixed properly there is no need for each individual part!! The stereo wave file of the track is more than adequate. Ask any record label A&R if it's necessary. They'll say "as long as it souds good". A&R's have no no interests in how you made the music, they just want to find the next Justin Timberlake and make MONEY!!!

They are going to try to stiff you on the engineer and mix charges. More than likely they will try to get you to make the music in their studio. Just say "No thanks, I'm going to continue to shop around" and they'll either give in or let you walk. No harm no foul. It's a rough economy so more than likely they will give in. Most of the producers at Trackmasterz were or are studio engineers. We know all the tricks.

The Bottom Line

Your demo a catchy hook (chorus), catchy beat (trackmasterz or you), some good easy to follow song structure and lyrics, and a good mix so you can hear everything clearly. If J-Lo can do it so can you!!

Customer Feedback

Trackmasterz tracks are respected in the industry. The production quality is excellent and the price is even better. One customer wrote:

"thanks, sent off my demo to an A&R and they loved it, downside they want me to drop fifty pounds before they'll consider signing me. You guys really are trackmasterz!! Can you make me a diet too?"

Lori Griffiths

Lori,
congrats!!! We're all pulling for you. Sorry we don't do diets, just be strong. That's how we got in this business and it takes faith and strength to survive. Thanks for the feedback Lori.

We have had some negative feedback, but nothing we could not resolve. Trackmasterz makes every effort to satisfy its customers.

"I bought a couple beats off you guys. When I took it to the studio, the engineer said he needed the individual tracks of each sound? What am I supposed to do with this beat, how the hell do I make a demo."

--disgruntled customer , NC

Disgruntled customer,
We apologize for the inconvenience you are going through. We do not provide individual tracks because there is a copyright royalty issue with reselling and redistributing sound files, banks, or loops. You can sell them within a creative work or song such as we are doing. Other companies may sell them individually but they are taking a huge legal risk and in short breaking the law.

We do have a solution though. Based off of your invoice we noticed you are in Raleigh, NC. Our executive producer, Jamille Luney, worked with sound engineers at Osceola Recording Studios located in Raleigh, NC. Osceola Studios has recorded Da Brat, Ludicrous, Tony Braxton, Little Brother, you name it. Osceola will be happy to work with you and we will pay for the five hours of your recording session. Again we are sorry for the inconvenience.

This may help you in the future: many of our employees are or were at some point audio engineers and the first rule of thumb in audio engineering is to please the customer (in a studio business setting of course). The audio engineer you were using was wrong. As long as nothing is distorted, and the mix is excellent (we check our mixes on over 100 different sound systems of all types of quality) the beat can be used and recorded over. More than likely he or she was trying to get you to schedule a separate session in an effort to make more money.

Customer Response

"Thanks so much,
Mark, NC
P.S he did suggest making the track in the studio "

Jamille Luney is the Next Missy Elliot

There is a new female producer on the rise and her name is Jamille Luney. Our last post ranked the current mainstream producers. However, there were no females on the list!! With the exception of Missy who else is there? We've heard that Alicia Keys produces her own music, but we'd like to hear that from the mouths of the sound engineers that worked on her projects. If they say she produced it herself than she did. If not, hmmm....... Make no mistake, Jamille Luney produces every sound herself (with the help of Propellerhead's Reason).

Luney, 26, has worked with Alfred Gaines (aka AJ, new producer for Def Jam), Dexter Redding (son of legendary singer Otis Redding), and Alex Teamer (produced new gospel sensation"Izzy" Israel Bell). Jamille's first roommate after moving to Florida was Danielle Renee (former vocalist and engineer for Ron Kenoly).

Her production is powerful. She is classically trained in both violin and piano (age 4) and her sister is a cellist. Her music is extremely diverse. One track can sound like a club banger while the next screams Neo-Soul and Nu Jazz. Look for Jamille to start making headlines by the end of this year. The final kicker, SHE'S GORGEOUS!! We're not knocking Missy Elliot, but Jamille wins this category hands down. "Jamille" actually means beautiful in Arabic. You can hear samples of her work at http://myspace.com/jamilleluney .

Trackmasterz.com: Producer Rankings 2007

Trackmasterz.com: Producer Rankings 2007

Producer Rankings 2007

1. Timbaland
2.
Rodney Jerkins (Dark Child)
3. Scott Storch
4. Neptunes
5. Kanye West

Timbaland
Timbaland is a compound producer. Compound producers stack their sounds. He usually off sets his drums so one lands .10 or of a second or less behind the other. This makes his tracks sound FULL!! He's too compound to figure out. This is why nobody is touching Timbaland.

Rodney Jerkins (Dark Child)
Rodney Jerkins is still incredible. In our opinion he's the most versatile. Who else could produce tracks like "Butterflies" and "You Rock My World" for Michael Jackson and then turn around and do "Loose My Breath" for Destiny's Child. He has worked with any and everybody. More importantly, he does not sample (impressive). We're not knocking sampling, but we are giving some props to Dark Child. Jerkins is a modern day Quincy Jones.

Scott Storch
Scott Storch is a Linear producer. He does not stack his drums and sounds (at least not often). You can easily pick out each sound when listening to his tracks. If you listen to Timbaland's tracks, you cannot tell where a sound begins or ends. However, Storch makes better melodies than Timbaland. Timbaland blasted Storch when he said "I'm a real producer you are just a piano man" (See You in the Club). He's right! Scott Storch's tracks are softer and more melodic (with the exception of "Lean Back" with Terror Squad). For the first years of his career, Storch was a key boardists for the Roots. His first track was actually "I Got You" featuring the Roots, Eve, and Eryka Badhu. Scott Storch is better at making tracks for singing. He's a "piano man" (Timbaland).

Neptunes
We all know and love the Neptunes. I loved "Drop it Like It's Hot" with Snoop. It was very creative. That was in 2005!! They need to step it up because Timbaland is just killing them.

Kanye West
Kanye is impressive, creative, and psychotic. However, that's what it takes to succeed in this industry. Kanye is a ranked at #4 (by us) because we need to hear something new. If anybody can challenge Timbaland, I believe Kanye can. His only downfall is his stuff tends to sound the same. I don't know why. He does flip his tracks up, but you can still tell it's Kanye. Maybe it's all the sampling. If you try to attack Kanye he will stab you with some kick drums and bass.

Jazze Pha
Jazze Pha is just boring all his stuff sounds the same!! He did not make the list. I believe he hung himself in over producing Ciara. There will never be another Aahliya and Timbaland. They were and are "One in a Million".

Independent Artists Fail Because They Market Like Major Record Labels

Independent artists FAIL when they try to market like major record labels. They do not have the manpower, resources, or money major labels have. You want to be the next Mary J Blidge? You want to work with Clive Davis because he's made Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and the list goes on. Well, a big name is simply a small name that grew over time. We're not saying give every little guy a shot? We're simply saying you must start small and grow (99% of the time) so keep that in mind when picking out your management, producers, artists, promoters, and performances. Gretchen Wilson started singing in a little bar where she worked, and Oprah used to have debt collectors calling her all the time when she was a small radio personality in Baltimore, MD. We know your sending Demos to Diddy and Timbaland, but take a look at some of the producers where you are. They're trying to attain the same status you are and both of you have nothing to lose. Diddy and Timbaland have millions to lose, you DO NOT!!

Make the record labels want you!! (even if you don't want them) Create a buzz. Remember you're an artists so time and energy is the equivalent of money. You cannot afford to lose either. Focus your time and energy in markets that welcome you. Look to small independent, public, college and online radio stations. Forget MTV, make your own music video (read our "To Do List" Post on this blog) and post it on your website, MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, and let others download it from you. Make your own website, link with other sites, and sell your music. Also sell your music through Cdbaby, they will distribute your music to all the major digital music stores for a small fee (like PayPal). As you name and popularity grow, the labels will start coming to you. This gives you bargaining power because you've already established you can sell on your own. They have to offer you some incentive to sign (for example royalties!!).

The Independent Recording Artists Must Do List

1. Make an album

2.Have pictures made (a press kit) and no glamour shots do not count

3.Shoot a decent video or get somebody to do some flash animation. The video does not have to look like you at all. Just find something that goes with your story line. (You can find some on You Tube--make sure you email the creator and ask if its okay to use it on your webpage)

4.Register with Cdbaby.com to sell your Cd * its only $30 a year and they also send your songs to itunes and all the other major download stores to be sold. Remeber you don't have to worry about paying for thousands of Cd's to be burned. People are steadily buying more and more online music. It's only going to increase. Gas costs a fortune why burn gas and drive to the Cd store that shelves no independent artists' music, when you can real music online!!** Sell digital downloads people ----it's the way of the future!! I don't care what anyone says (not even cdbaby---cdbaby cautions artists that digital downloads sell less than cd's. This is my only problem with Cdbaby. My response is go grab Billboard Magazine every month and read the record sale numbers vs. the digital download numbers. Own an Ipod? Seen the new one? I rest my case. We still love Cdbaby. We just respectfuly disagree**

5.Make a web page ---post your music and videos on there, performances, fan club, etc...

6.Make a music MySpace page, Facebook page, YouTube Page, cdbaby page, hit up craig's list

7.Link all the pages together and submit your pages to search engines (make sure your page works before you submit it!!)

8.Start performing---give people your webpage, let them know who you are

Its still a long road but there are plenty of resources and opportunities. If you are stuck on task number 1 (making an album) because its costly, here are some quality resources you can use that are affordable.

For selling your music
http://www.cdbaby.com/ they connect you with a host of other companeis such as itunes and SoundScan. Also for $20-$30 extra they provide a UPC barcode from SoundScan for your product.

Trackmasterz.com

Trackmasterz.com is a new online music production company that caters to independent artists. Many artist have a unique sound but cannot afford a powerful track. Trackmasterz provides tracks that match your creativity and budget without sacrificing quailty. All music is available in both Wave file and Mp3 format. In addition, our non-exclusive agreement gives artist the freedom to use our track in conjunction with their work and resell that work (which contains our track) up to 5000 times. No track exceeds $100 dollars in price. Why are they so inexpensive? What's the catch? We will not lie to you; we sell tracks non-exclusively. This means we have thousands of people purchasing the same track. Once you purchase it you can record what you want over it and sell that work up to 5ooo times. The catch, you cannot resell the track by itself, you must record a song, video game, animation, or other form of artwork on the track. The reality, there are thousands of people with the same track, but there is only one person who can do what you do. Roberta Flack sang "Killing Me Softly" but Lauryn Hill ripped it up with the Fugees. Dolly Parton wrote and sang "I Will Always Love You", but Whitney Houston made it famous with the Bodygaurd Soundtrack. You make the song not the track, you make the song your song, and you sell the song not the track. At trackmasterz, we make your voice the centerpiece and shine the spotlight on you.

What's the purpose of a voice if it's never heard?

Nothing!

What's your purpose?
